ALBANY, NY (11/07/2013)(readMedia)-- THE MAKIOKA SISTERS (SASAME-YUKI, Japan, 1983, 140 minutes, color, in Japanese with English subtitles, directed by Kon Ichikawa) will be shown on Friday, November 22, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. in Page Hall, 135 Western Avenue, on the University at Albany's downtown campus. Sponsored by the New York State Writers Institute as part of its Classic Film Series, the screening is free and open to the public.
Set in 1938 this film follows the lives of four sisters as they confront changing cultural attitudes between centuries-old Japanese tradition and encroaching elements of modern society. Gentle in tone and visually lush at times, the film is a lyrical adaptation of a novel my popular Japanese author Junichiro Tankzaki.
